Rare earth elements
A group of 17 elements, the 15 lanthanides plus scandium and yttrium, used in technologies ranging from permanent magnets to catalysts.
Despite the name, they are not especially rare in the Earth’s crust. The challenge is finding them in economically workable concentrations and separating them. According to the USGS, about seven in ten tons of world production in 2024 came from China.
