Kurultai

A council in Turkic and Mongol statecraft that confirmed or chose the ruler, set customary law and took major decisions such as war and peace.

The kurultai continues the older “toy” assemblies of the Huns, Göktürks and Uyghurs. The word spread during the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. In modern Turkey it is also used for the national congresses of political parties.
